When you think HD, you think higher resolution, broader color space, and advanced compression algorithms that deliver a substantial improvement in video quality. But not all HD camcorders are made the same, and the selection out there can be daunting. While competitors continue to reinvent themselves and set new trends in the digital market, there is some consistent feedback from technology reviewers and consumers alike when it comes to the favorites. If you’re shopping in the under $1000 category, here are two of your best bets:

1) Canon VIXIA HF S10. The VIXIA HF S10 delivers brilliant picture quality through an 8.59 megapixel CMOS image sensor and Canon’s advanced image processor, DIGIC DV III. Compared to the compact HF20 model, this model is slightly more “pro”and features a larger and faster lens, higher resolution, and more advanced capabilities. Although it’s not the lightest weight available (weighs just over a pound), it’s still light and easy to hold, and fairly compact in size especially given the convenience of an internal dual flash 32 GB drive. This not only allows the HF S10 to capture up to 12 hours of crisp high definition video to its large internal memory, but also to a removable SDHC card for extended available recording space. In addition, exclusive features like the Genuine Canon 10x optical zoom HD video lens, SuperRange optical image stabilizer, and sophisticated face detection capability give the user a range of control and creative options for creating optimal video.

2) Canon VIXIA HF20. If you’re looking for something slightly less expensive than the VIXIA HF S10, but still want beautiful video footage, the HF20 strikes a great balance between performance, features, and price. Most of the features found in the HF S10 can be found in the HF20 including 32 GB built-in memory. However, the HF20 is more compact and slightly less powerful than the S10. In addition, you won’t find some of the more advanced capabilities like a manual control dial, zebra stripes, color bars, or a pop-up flash. But the HF20 does offer a longer 15x zoom lens and boasts essential features like an accessory shoe, microphone input, and headphone jack, which competitors like Sony and Panasonic don’t provide in their mid-level cameras. Even in low light, the camcorder focuses quickly and accurately creating sharp, excellent exposures and great video quality. Overall, the VIXIA HF20 is a good alternative to the high-end HF S10 if you need a smaller, not-as-expensive model with many of the same set of features.
